I am delighted to bring Literature Cambridge Ltd to Substack. We are a small independent business, teaching great literature online and in person.
I started Literature Cambridge to bring some of the best of university study of literature to a wide audience. Many people love reading and are looking for high quality lectures to deepen their understanding of great novels, poetry, and drama.
Our teachers are leading scholars and university academics. They are hugely knowledgeable and share that knowledge in clear, interesting lectures. Our courses are accessible and intelligent, without any ‘dumbing down’. I think that’s one of our best qualities.
Our first event was a five-day summer course in Cambridge on Virginia Woolf in 2016. This was hugely successful, with people coming to Cambridge from many different countries. Now, we offer a summer course every year. This usually takes place twice in July – first live online, then, later in July, in person in Cambridge. It’s an amazing, intensive event. We will post more about the summer course soon.
In 2020, during lockdown, we introduced lectures and courses online, and found a large, enthusiastic audience who joined us regularly from all over the world.
Our online courses study a great range of writers, including Shakespeare, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Keats, Jane Austen, Dickens, George Eliot, Tennyson, Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth von Arnim, Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Elizabeth Bowen, George Orwell, Zora Neale Hurston, Doris Lessing, Toni Morrison, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and many others. Plus courses on London in Literature, Contemporary Fiction, 20thC Gay Writing, Greek Tragedy, 20thC Women Writers, Victorian Women, Romantic Poetry, Refugee Writings, and more.
We specialise in literature in English, and we also study great works from ancient Rome and Greece.
We run ten-month Seasons of lectures on Virginia Woolf, Women Writers, and Victorian Literature.
At present these courses are mainly online, and we hope to add more in-person courses in Cambridge in the future.
